A zookeeper was attacked by a tiger at the Saint-Félicien wild zoo in the Lac-St-Jean region of Quebec this morning.

Quebec provincial police said the man was inside the pen with the tiger and was seriously injured.

He was still conscious when he was rushed to hospital by ambulance.

Zoo officials have put the tiger into an isolation pen, but have not killed it.

Employees at the zoo are currently meeting to try to figure out what happened, and Quebec's workplace health and safety investigators are looking into the incident.

The zoo takes a natural approach to its animal habitats and attempts to recreate their natural topography, even allowing some species to cohabit as they would in the wild.

It is home to more than 1,000 animals, several of those being the endangered Amur tigers. The tigers are found in the wild in eastern Russia and parts of China and North Korea.
