Quebec police raids target alleged Mafia members

A major police operation is currently underway targeting 32 alleged Mafia members Montreal, Laval Gatineau and Quebec City.

More than 200 officers from a number of police forces are involved in raids, as part of Operation Clemenza.

The operation is being led by the RCMP.

The raids were sparked after police intercepted messages between the Guiseppe De Vito and Bastone brothers Mafia cells.

Police have arrest warrants for 32 people with links to the two cells and have already managed to apprehend 26 of those on the list.

Both cells, which the RCMP describes as "violent and active," emerged after a 2006 police operation code-named Colisée left the Mafia leadership in disarray.

Colisée resulted in the arrests of more than 70 people, including 16 who were believed to hold leadership positions in the Montreal Mafia.

Giueseppe de Vito was one of the leaders targeted by Operation Colisée, but he managed to avoid arrest until 2010.

An associate of the Rizzuto clan, De Vito was found dead in his jail cell last year.

A coroner's report found traces of cyanide in his blood.

More to come
