This election — tipped as a tight two-way race between Kathleen Wynne's Liberals and the Progressive Conservative Party led by Tim Hudak — was triggered when NDP Leader Andrea Horwath refused to support the minority Liberals' budget.

On Thursday morning, Elections Ontario workers were busy setting up polling booths in the west Toronto riding of Etobicoke-Lakeshore.

The riding was won by PC candidate Doug Holyday, who finished ahead of Liberal candidate Peter Milczyn in a 2013 byelection. This time out, the two former city councillors face each other again, with P.C. Choo again running for the NDP.

"Campaign workers are setting up tables here, getting ready for what will be a long day," reported the CBC's Linda Ward.

There are questions about voter turnout in this election. It has fallen steadily in recent elections dipping to an all-time low of 48 per cent in 2011.

Ward reported Thursday that party workers are busy trying to ensure their supporters get to the polls.

"This election will depend on every single riding, every single vote," Ward reported. "Right now the parties are checking those votes, making sure those who said they are going to vote for them actually get out to the polls. That's really what this election will come down to."

Wynne started her day with an early morning run in Toronto. As she jogged past the cameras she asked "Is everyone voting?" She cast her ballot just after 11 a.m. in her riding of Don Valley West, and implored voters to get out to the polls today.

"It's such an important process, such an important election," she said.

Leaders of all three major parties took to Twitter on Thursday, encouraging eligible voters to head to the polls

Hudak, who used advance polls to vote in the riding of Niagara West — Glanbrook, will make one public appearance in Mississauga today before heading to a community centre in Grimsby, about 80 kilometres south of Toronto, after the polls close.

Horwath has a media event at 12:30 p.m. in Toronto but will watch the results roll in at an election night party in Stoney Creek, just outside Hamilton. Horwath also voted in advance polls in the riding of Hamilton Centre.

Polls close at 9 p.m.
