Rob Ford supporters donating to help pay legal bills

Someone is looking to raise $50,000 to help Toronto Mayor Rob Ford pay his legal bills.

A campaign on the crowdfunding website Indiegogo alleges the mayor has been unfairly targeted by "special interests and big media organizations" with "nuisance lawsuits."

It cites as an example the recent conflict between Ford and Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale, who is taking legal action over comments the mayor made during a recent interview with Conrad Black on VisionTV.

"It's time for Torontonians to stand up and say enough is enough. We now have to stand against these special interest bullies and show them that this harassment has to stop," the campaign page reads.

The money will go to Ford to help pay his legal bills, it says. By Saturday afternoon it had raised just under $1,000. If it does not reach its $50,000 goal within 60 days, the money will be returned to the donors.

Ford was the subject, though not the intended beneficiary, of an Indiegogo campaign earlier this year when the U.S. gossip site Gawker raised $200,000 in an unfruitful attempt to buy the so-called Rob Ford crack video.

The pro-Ford campaign says it is independent and according to Indiegogo, is run by someone named Iain McLaren.

A Toronto man by that name has been tweeting links to the campaign page since Thursday. On Twitter he lists his interests as "football, fundraising [and] freedom."
