Police say a Calgary man was killed when the aircraft he was piloting crashed into a home near Lloydminster on Saturday afternoon.
The crash happened at around 1 p.m. MT in Kitscoty, near Lloydminster. Sgt. Jamie Hubbert with the Kitscoty RCMP said the plane hit the ground about 40 metres from the house before sliding into it.
One person was home at the time but was not hurt.
Hubbert said the pilot was the only person in the plane. He was dead when rescue crews arrived.
"What we've been able to determine is the pilot was a male in his early 60s. He was from the Calgary area. He had just departed the Lloydminster Airport and was making his way towards High River, according to the flight plan," said Hubbert.
"We've been in touch with the next of kin and advised them of the tragic circumstances of the accident and based on that conversation we're not prepared to divulge the name or identity of the individual involved."
Hubbert said the pilot had recently dropped some passengers off at the nearby Lloydminster Municipal Airport.
It's not yet clear what caused the crash, but the Transportation Safety Board will investigate.
"What we're waiting on are for investigators from Transport Canada to attend to the scene and conduct their investigation. They're scheduled to arrive early tomorrow morning from Edmonton and they'll be reviewing the wreckage and trying to make a determination as to some sort of cause for the accident," said Hubbert.
Kiscoty is about 225 kilometres east of Edmonton and 25 kilometres west of Lloydminster.
