Calgary police have a man in custody after former radio sports personality Billy Powers and his wife were found dead in Calgary's southwest community of Braeside.
Calgary police are investigating two suspicious deaths in the southwest neighbourhood of Braeside. (Allison Dempster/CBC) Police got a call from a passerby shortly after 5 a.m. MT, expressing concern about a man on the street near Southland Drive and 14th Street S.W.
That man directed officers to a nearby home in the 1700 block of 110th Avenue S.W., where the bodies of a man and a woman were discovered.
While police are not formally naming the victims, QR77 has set up a tribute page for Powers — a former employee — and his wife Donna Lee.
"Billy was a marvelous sports director for News Talk 770 and a friend to us all," the tribute says. "We remember both Billy and Donna Lee and all those who mourn them."
Billy Powers retired in October 2009 after almost 50 years in the sports broadcasting and communications business.
'Larger-than-life person'
He worked mainly in radio, covering sports and the Calgary Stampeders football team.
"Bill was a larger-than-life person who brought laughter to everyone around him," said Stampeders president Gordon Norrie. "He was an engaged Calgarian in terms of the community and a valuable and contributing member of the Stampeder Football Club. Bill and Donna Lee will be missed."
He also worked for a brief period in the late 1980s as media co-ordinator for the Stampeders. He was inducted into the hall of fame in 2001.
Duty Inspector Mike Tillotson says a knife was found near the scene, but he couldn't confirm if it was connected to the deaths.
Officials say the deaths are being treated as suspicious, and the homicide unit has been called in.
Police have roped off several different areas in the neighbourhood as part of the investigation. Autopsies are scheduled for tomorrow.
