This year's gay pride celebrations unofficially mark a milestone year in many ways for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community.

This year saw the first openly gay professional baskeball player, Jason Collins came out, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional to deny federal benefits to same-sex couples and Canada marked the 10th anniversary of its first same-sex marriage.

On Sunday, Ontario's Kathleen Wynne, Canada's first openly gay premier, will make history as the first sitting premier to march in Toronto's Pride Parade.

But, for some equality is still a goal, not a reality, and the struggle is far from over.

"The most important role that pride still plays is the message it sends to LGBT youth," said University of Toronto law Prof. Brenda Crossman.

CBC's Natalie Kalata takes a look at the festivities in Toronto and listens to some personal stories of the struggle for equality in the LGBT community.
