One of the men embroiled in the crack cocaine scandal involving Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of alleged gang member Anthony Smith, avoiding a trial.
Nisar Hashimi was charged three months ago with first-degree murder in the shooting of Anthony Smith outside a Toronto nightclub.
Smith was a member of a drug-dealing gang and was photographed before his death with Ford outside a known crack den.
Smith's killer, Nisar Hashimi struck a deal Thursday, pleading guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter.
The deal means police disclosure — including wiretaps, seized cellphones and any potential video involving the mayor – will never be made part of the court record in the case.
However, media organizations including CBC News are still applying to the court to have police search warrants unsealed to see whether there is any evidence implicating Toronto's mayor in illicit drug use.
