A large police presence is expected on the streets of Guelph this afternoon in order to contain the large crowds anticipated at public visitations today and Wednesday for a local police officer killed in the line of duty last week.

Investigators believe 26-year-old Const. Jennifer Kovach lost control of her cruiser at about 12:30 a.m. before her car crossed the median line and slammed head-on into a transit bus.

Visitation is open to the public Tuesday and Wednesday between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. in the afternoon and 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. later this evening in the Heart Chapel at the Gilbert MacIntyre and Sons Funeral Home on Gordon Street in Guelph's south-end.

"The Kovach family will receive friends, family and the community," Guelph Police Chief Bryan Larkin said Monday.

Meanwhile, the public funeral for Constable Jennifer Kovach is set to take place at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Sleeman Centre in downtown Guelph.

Guelph Police Chief Bryan Larkin said his service has been given extra resources with support and staffing from Guelph Emergency Services, the City of Guelph and the Toronto Police Service in order to plan and coordinate such a large public event.

Police release new details in fatal crash

Meanwhile, new details were released about last Thursday's fatal crash.

Guelph Police believe Kovach lost control of her cruiser while responding to a call, before her car crossed the middle line and slammed head-on into a public transit bus at around 12:30 a.m. Thursday March 14th.

Police Chief Bryan Larkin said Kovach was responding to a call for assistance for a drug seizure at the time of the crash and that she was responding in order to help a a fellow officer deal with an uncooperative suspect, but Larkin also said the exact cause of Kovach's fatal crash would not be available for sometime.

"Right now, the focus is on Jennifer Kovach and celebrating her life," he said. "Once we finish this enormous task we will come back to updating the community on this fatal collision."
