Conservative MP Mark Warawa is a "rogue member" and has to suffer the consequences of holding views contrary to his caucus, one of his caucus colleagues said Wednesday morning after Warawa complained he wasn't allowed to talk about abortion in the House of Commons.
Warawa raised a question of privilege in the House of Commons yesterday over the party's leadership interfering in his ability to talk about whatever he wants in the time set aside for members' statements.
MPs get 15 one-minute slots every day to talk about issues important to them or their constituents. Those statements are referred to as SO-31s. Warawa says he was on the list last Thursday but was removed after submitting a statement on his sex-selective abortion motion. He asked House Speaker Andrew Scheer to rule on whether the Conservative House leader can decide who gets to make those statements.
Conservative MPs Leon Benoit and Rod Bruinooge spoke in support of Warawa's question of privilege.
Ontario Conservative MP Jay Aspin told reporters on the way into caucus that it's Warawa's problem he brought up an issue contrary to party policy.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper has repeatedly said the Conservatives won't reopen the abortion debate.
'Rogue members' have to 'suffer the consequences'
Aspin says Warawa "needs to think about that and address his problem."
"If these rogue members want to do what they want to do, they have to suffer the consequences and that's all I have to say," Aspin said.
"He [Warawa] is a rogue member for this particular issue."
NDP House Leader Nathan Cullen is expected to respond to the question of privilege this afternoon. He said yesterday the NDP wanted to review the rules of the House.
Warawa will appear before the procedure and House affairs committee this afternoon to appeal a decision by its subcommittee. The subcommittee last week said his motion to condemn sex-selective abortion, M-408, couldn't go before the House for debate because it fell outside the rules of the House.
