The first-degree murder trial of a man accused of running down a Toronto police officer with a stolen snowplow two years ago begins today.

Richard Kachkar, 46, is charged in the death of Sgt. Ryan Russell, an 11-year veteran of the force.

Jury selection was held last month. Kachkar has pleaded not guilty.

Police allege Kachkar stole the snowplow, and then led police on a wild chase through snow-covered city streets on Jan. 12, 2011. Russell was struck by the plow near Avenue and Davenport roads.

Russell, 35, became the first Toronto police officer killed while on duty since 1994. He left behind a wife and young son and was promoted to sergeant six months before his death.

Russell's funeral was attended by thousands of police officers and members of the public.

His widow, Christine Russell, reflected on her difficult first year without her husband in an interview with CBC Radio's Metro Morning in January 2012.
