Ontario Education Minister Laurel Broten said today she will allow one-day walkouts by teachers to go ahead in two small school boards without legislating them back to work, but she's prepared to "take action" if the job action goes further.
The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (EFTO) union gave formal notice Wednesday that one-day walkouts will be staged in two small school districts: Avon Maitland and Ontario North East School Districts on Monday.
The Avon Maitland District School Board has schools in communities such as Stratford, Wingham and Goderich, while the Ontario North East District School Board covers communities such as Timmins, Kirkland Lake and Iroquois Falls.
Broten said Thursday the walkouts are a "disappointing development," but said she will hold the union to its promise not to go further with their job action.
"Given that ETFO has provided five days notice … I prepared to let one day of legal strike action go," Broten said Thursday.
The move comes after the elementary teachers union voted in favour of a political protest if Broten blocks their legal strike with Bill 115.
Enacted in September, the controversial law freezes teacher's wages and can put a stop to strike action.
"If strike action goes beyond one day, I have the necessary legal documents drafted and ready to end any strike action that will put student success and safety at risk," said Broten.
Broten also said the union should make available to parents any plans of further walkouts.
"My hope is that after the one-day strike action, ETFO will focus on bargaining," she said.
