Police and the fire marshal are investigating a fire that sent 11 people to hospital — four of them with 'critical injuries' — in Barrie, Ont., on Friday evening.
The exact number of people in the house at 59 Collete Crescent when the fire broke out is not yet clear.
Neighbours said they heard explosions, or what sounded like loud bangs. Deputy fire chief Jeff Weber said this was a challenging blaze to battle.
"They had very difficult conditions in the upstairs when they went to the second floor to do a primary search, and once they confirmed that they had all the people accounted for that were in the house, they retreated back outside to a defensive attack," Weber said.
The fire was first reported not long after 9 p.m. ET.
The blaze, which was under control before midnight Friday, is under investigation by both Barrie Police and the Ontario Fire Marshal.
