Two bodies were found this morning in the charred ruins of a house in the small western Quebec community of Gracefield, but police said it's too early to tell if they're the two-year-old girl and four-year-old boy who are unaccounted for after a Thursday fire.
A man, a woman and a child were taken to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and shock after the fire at their home on Eloi Lachapelle Street around 3:30 p.m. ET. Their injuries are not considered life threatening, police said.
The house was destroyed.
Police said the two bodies were too badly burned to identify. Autopsies will be conducted.
The evening of the fire, Gracefield Mayor Joanne Poulin was among members of the small community who gathered near the scene of the blaze.
"It's tragic," Poulin said. "For a small community like us, it's not easy for everybody."
Gracefield is about 90 kilometres north of downtown Ottawa.
