In this online-only video, CBC correspondent Adrienne Arsenault brings you the story of Canadian coach Neal Henderson of the Fort Dupont Cannons in Washington, D.C., the oldest club in the NHL's program meant to promote hockey in urban settings.

The program was not intended to promote hockey in minority communities, but in some ways, that's what it has ended up becoming, Arsenault reports.

Players from the longtime coach's team will be among those skating Thursday at a second, smaller rink during the league's outdoor Winter Classic in Washington on New Year's Day.

Click the video above to hear the historical reasons Henderson chose the team colours, and how he tells players to deal with racism at the rink.
