A 59-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly forcing his way into the home of a 101-year-old war veteran, robbing him and leaving him bound with a plastic bag over his head.
Ottawa police released photos and a surveillance video after the home invasion at 31 Durham Pvt. on Thursday morning.
A tip led to the arrest of a suspect on Friday, police said. Police have not released the suspect's name but the man is expected to appear in court on Saturday to face several charges:
- Attempted murder.
- Robbery with violence.
- Forcible confinement.
- Break and enter.
- Use a credit card obtained by crime (two counts).
Ernest Côté, a veteran of the Second World War, was alone in his apartment when a man claiming to be a City of Ottawa employee asked to be buzzed into the building around 7:30 a.m. ET on Thursday.

Once in the building, the man forced himself into Côté's apartment and demanded money.
Côté was robbed and left tied up with a plastic bag over his head. He managed to free himself after the man left and called 911. He was not injured.
