Snow wallops New Brunswick, closing schools, leaving thousands without power

Written By Unknown on Senin, 03 November 2014 | 22.40

New Brunswick's first snowstorm this season has closed schools across the province and left more than 13,000 NB Power customers without electricity.

Many students will also be without classes Monday, as schools in these areas have been shut:

  • Anglophone West School District and the Anglophone North School District.
  • Anglophone North School District schools (excluding Rexton and Harcourt).
  • Francophone North East and Francophone North West districts.
  • Francophone South schools in Oromocto and Fredericton.
  • Carrefour Beausoleil in Miramichi.
  • The NBCC campus in Woodstock.

Riverside Consolidated School in the Anglophone East School District is closed because of building issues.

The snow started falling on Sunday in many parts of the province. Roughly 22.8 centimetres fell in Bathurst on Sunday.

Jay Scotland, a CBC meteorologist, said some parts of New Brunswick will have more than snow to be concerned about later on Monday.

"After heavy snow yesterday, New Brunswick will contend with very strong winds today as an area of low pressure over the Gulf of St. Lawrence continues to push north towards Labrador," Scotland said.

"Light snow this morning will taper off to flurries but blowing snow could be an issue due to strong winds in the wake of this storm system this morning. Both Fredericton and Halifax will see the temperature hover around 2 C with gusty west-northwest winds and the risk for a few snow or snow/rain showers."

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for eastern and northeastern New Brunswick.

"An intense low-pressure system will track northward across the Gulf of St. Lawrence today," it says. "Very strong northerly winds associated with this system are producing higher than normal water levels and pounding surf along the East Coast of New Brunswick. Conditions will improve this morning."

Thousands without electricity

NB Power reported 13,126 customers had no power as of 10:57 a.m. AT.

The hardest-hit area is Woodstock, where 5,490 customers are without power, followed by Campbellton/Dalhousie with 1,897, Bathurst with 1,672 and Rothesay with 1,221.

Meghan Gerrish, a spokeswoman for NB Power, said crews were working overnight to try to restore power.

She said heavy, wet snow in the Woodstock area has caused branches and leaves to fall onto power lines.

New Brunswick isn't the only jurisdiction struggling with a large number of outages on Monday morning.

Emera is reporting 58,000 customers without power in Maine at 8:12 a.m. AT.

Meanwhile, Central Maine Power reported another 83,128 customers were in the dark.

Dangerous driving conditions

Transport trucks backed up

Driving is dangerous in parts of the province.

Two transport trucks were stuck in the snow around midnight in the Meductic area.

Earlier on Monday, Felicia Murphy, a spokeswoman for Brun-Way Highways Operations Inc., said police were diverting traffic at the Dougan Road exit.

She said RCMP officers were telling people to go home or use the old Trans-Canada Highway, as traffic is backed up for several kilometres.

Murphy said tow trucks have arrived at the Trans-Canada Highway, eastbound near Meductic.

Traffic on that section of the Trans-Canada Highway is now moving slowly.

Louis Lacoste, a trucker, was one of hundreds of people who were forced to spend the night in their vehicles.

The trucker told Radio-Canada he has been stuck in his truck since about 9:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Ross Mathers, of the Maritime Road Development Corp., said there is heavy slush on the Trans-Canada Highway from Kings Landing to New Maryland.

There is light slush after New Maryland and the highway starts to clear up closer to Moncton, he said.
