Snowfall warnings have been issued for most of northern New Brunswick, while wind warnings have been issued for parts of southern Nova Scotia and all of P.E.I.
Barrie MacKinnon, a meteorologist with Environment Canada says that 20 to 30 centimetres of snow and ice pellets are expected for western, northern and central New Brunswick.
Winds in those areas are expected to range from 30 to 50 kilometres per hour, but should pick up later this evening to 40 to 60 kilometres per hour.
"It's already started to snow in areas of New Brunswick and that should pick up this morning and kind of be at its peak this afternoon with the heaviest snow," said MacKinnon.
Southern New Brunswick and Nova Scotia should get hit mostly with rain. Winds are expected to be 30 to 50 kilometres per hour, gusting to 90 kilometres per hour tonight in some coastal areas.
Environment Canada wind warnings
Environment Canada has issued a wind warning for southern Nova Scotia, specifically covering Digby and Yarmouth counties.
Environment Canada has also issued a wind warning for P.E.I. The high winds are expected to reach gusts of 90 kilometres per hour.
New Brunswick road conditions
The Fredericton area has seen a mostly somewhat icy rain. Saturday night, police say a car hydroplaned off the road on Highway 7 into a light stand.
In a 9 a.m. Sunday tweet, New Brunswick RCMP cautioned that road conditions are deteriorating due to the weather near Woodstock and Meductic on Route 2.
In Miramachi, police say the snow is not accumulating much and there are no plows on the road.
New Brunswick power outages
Late Sunday morning, NB Power said 781 customers were without power in the Fredericton (624), Woodstock (113), St. Stephen (33), Bouctouche (10) and Moncton (1) areas.
The hardest hit community was Gagetown where 573 customers were without power, followed by Cumberland Bay (46), Fredericton (4) and Williamsburg (1).
Transportation impacts
Maritime Bus is warning four of its routes could face delays or cancellations because of the weather. Specificially, it has issued warning regarding routes:
- 341 - Moncton to Campbellton
- 700 - Moncton to Rivière-du-Loup, departing at noon
- 702 - Moncton to Rivière-du-Loup, departing at 5 p.m.
- 703 - Rivière-du-Loup to Moncton, departing at 12:15 p.m.
The weather could have an impact on ferry service in North Sydney, Nova Scotia. Marine Atlantic is saying there could be a cancellation tonight or tomorrow for the crossing between North Sydney and Port aux Basques, Newfoundland.
Flights in the Maritimes are generally running on time and the Confederation Bridge does not have any restrictions.
