Police in Abbotsford, B.C., now say a man spotted carrying a girl into the bushes last night may be a parent or guardian, and they are asking him to come forward and speak to them.
The unidentified man was spotted Tuesday evening by a passing motorist, who reported seeing him pick up an unidentified girl and carry her into the bushes.
Police determined the witness was credible and began a search of the area, which was expanded to include local search and rescue crews. It was called off at 3:30 a.m. PT without finding anyone.
Now police say numerous witnesses have reported seeing a man and a girl matching their descriptions in the time before the report and they do not believe the incident was a stranger abduction.
Const. Ian MacDonald said on Tuesday night that a motorist reported seeing a young girl, about six to 10 years old, lying on the side of the road near Enterprise Avenue and McCallum Road at 6:20 p.m.
The motorist said the girl was wearing a pink jacket and didn't appear to be moving, and a white man in his 40s, who had curly brown hair and was wearing jeans and a dark jean jacket, was with her.
"The witness observed the man pick the girl up off the ground and carry her in the direction of a treed area just to the west of that location," MacDonald said in a written statement.
Central Fraser Valley Search and Rescue joined the search, just after 9 p.m., but it was called off at 3:30 a.m. because of darkness.
