Frigo was killed over the weekend in Clinton, Ont. (Out of Doors Magazine)
Don Frigo, the 70-year-old Toronto businessman who was shot and killed on horseback Saturday near Clinton, Ont., was an avid outdoorsman, according to his colleague, Peter Naccarato.
"It's something he enjoyed doing, he enjoyed riding his horses, he enjoyed his dogs, and it comes as a complete shock," said Naccarato, who worked with Frigo for 30 years at Hady Construction Associates. "Don was a hard worker, he loved doing what he did, and his passion was to enjoy farm life, the country life if you will, ride his horse and he had a love of dogs from the very beginning."
Frigo was with a female companion, described by co-workers as his wife Eva, but provincial police would not confirm her identity. The pair were riding horses in the Hullett Wildlife Conservation Area outside Clinton, a town of 3,200 about 200 kilometres west of Toronto.
Just after 5 p.m., an unknown male approached the riders and shot Frigo on horseback. The woman was injured, but managed to escape, according to the OPP.
Police don't have any suspects in custody and remain tight-lipped about the shooting. They've a set up a 24-hour communications post in the firehall in Clinton, and have brought in a forensics team to investigate.
Naccarato says he was stunned to learn of Frigo's death.
"I heard that there was a shooting in the Clinton area, and knowing he was there this weekend, I got concerned," he said.
Naccarato confirmed his worst fears when he spotted a website about hunting dogs had posted a photo of Frigo with a remembrance.
"It was very disheartening, very disappointing, very shocking. It's something that still surreal and it's hard to kind of absorb," he said.
Frigo was a vice-president at Hady, based in Etobicoke, Ont. The group is a division of the well-known Sorbara Group, a real estate, development and management company.
"He was a gentleman, he was a very charming man. He enjoyed life," said Naccarato. "He took his business work very seriously; he pushed to make that work,"
As for Frigo's companion, Naccarato isn't sure.
"Haven't heard, haven't been able to get any information."
Anyone with information are being asked to contact the Huron County OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
