1 dead after Quebec tour bus rolls over on New York highway

A Quebec tour bus carrying more than 50 people has rolled over in New York, killing one and injuring others.

State police spokeswoman Darcy Wells says the bus rolled over Friday morning on Interstate 87, also known as the Adirondack Northway. She had no information on the number of injuries or their extent.  

Images from the scene show the bus lying on its side in a ditch at the side of the highway.

The bus crashed along the same stretch of road that saw a similar incident in 2004.

The tour operator, JaimonVoyage, says the bus was travelling from Quebec City to New York City.  

Josiane Grimard of JaimonVoyage.com told Radio-Canada that the bus crashed at 8 a.m. ET Friday, and she had no word on the cause.

She said the vehicle was owned by a subcontractor.  

The passengers were from Quebec, Trois-Rivières and Longueuil, and scheduled to return from New York City on Sunday, she said.

"Those in good health will be brought back to Quebec by a bus we're sending down for that purpose," Grimard said.

A number of local rescue squads have been sent to the scene, where the bus is on its side in the median.

Injured passengers were taken to a hospital in Elizabethtown.

North Hudson is about 145 kilometres north of Albany.
