A one-year-old boy and a man in his 40s were killed after their SUV collided with a Quebec City-bound Via Rail passenger train east of Montreal this morning, Quebec provincial police say.
Images from the scene show the front of the SUV at the side of the tracks and the rear of the vehicle several hundred metres back.
The front end of the SUV involved in the collision with Via Rail's Train 20 en route to Quebec City was torn off by the impact. The rest of the SUV was dragged further down the tracks and ended up next to a cattle barn. (Radio-Canada)
Police have not provided any further details about the two who died Monday.
Via Rail said the collision involved its Train 20, which was en route to Quebec City from Montreal.
Jacques Gagnon, a spokesman for Via Rail, said no one on the train was hurt in the collision, but the two engineers were being treated for shock.
It's still unclear what exactly transpired, but Gagnon said there was no particular concern about safety at that crossing.
"The information we have from our operations control centre is that the barriers were down and the signals were functioning as they always do," he said.
He said that buses have been dispatched to get the passengers on the train to their destination and to handle passengers from other delayed trains.
The Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
Transports Québec has shut down Highway 116 in both directions at Saint-Liboire.
The collision occurred about 90 kilometres east of Montreal.
