As Toronto police continue their search for Christopher Peloso — the husband of former Ontario deputy premier George Smitherman — politicians are taking to Twitter to express hope for his safe return.
Peloso, 39, was last seen in Toronto's Davenport Road and Bathurst Street area at 4 p.m. on Monday afternoon. He was going for a walk near his home.
Smitherman, who was also a Toronto mayoralty candidate in 2010, issued a statement Tuesday expressing concern for Peloso but Smitherman did not want to speak on camera.
Police told CBC News on Wednesday they have no new leads or information but are continuing to work on the case.
Federal Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and Ontario Transportation Minister Glen Murray issued Twitter messages about Peloso's disappearance yesterday:
Smitherman and Peloso married six years ago and have two adopted children.
The couple's home was listed for sale last Thursday and offers on the property were due to be submitted on Tuesday.
Peloso is described as five feet eight inches tall and weighs about 150 pounds. He has brown eyes and short, light-brown hair.
He was last seen wearing a dark-blue jacket with a hood, tan-coloured cargo shorts and blue flip-flops.
Smitherman served as an MPP at the Ontario legislature for more than a decade. Under former premier Dalton McGuinty, Smitherman held several senior cabinet roles including deputy premier, health minister and energy minister.
Anyone with information about Peloso is asked to contact police at 416-808-1300, or to call Crime Stoppers at 416-222-8477.
