Former Guantanamo Bay inmate Omar Khadr will make what is expected be his first appearance in public when the Toronto-born man enters an Edmonton courtroom this morning.
Khadr is applying to have his detention in an adult prison in Edmonton declared illegal.
It will be the first time the public will get a look at the Toronto-born man, now 27, since he was captured by American soldiers as a 15-year-old in Afghanistan 11 years ago. He served time at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba before being returned to Canada.
Khadr's lawyer says he wants people to be able to see his client, even though he will not speak during the Superior Court hearing.
Khadr pleaded guilty to five war crimes in October 2010 before a U.S. military commission and was given an eight-year sentence.
The federal government opposes the application and argues Khadr has been appropriately placed in the adult maximum- security facility.
CBC News is live blogging from the hearing.
