N.S. election call imminent

A Nova Scotia provincial election call is expected within the next 24 hours.

The New Democratic Party will unveil its election platform Friday ahead of an actual election call.

CBC reporter Jean Laroche said the move is highly unusual.

"I can tell you in the 25 years I've been covering politics I've never seen anything like it. It is highly unusual to have a platform made public ahead of an actual election call," he said.

Laroche said a call this weekend means Nova Scotians would be going to the polls on Oct. 8

Provincial staff will hold a technical briefing starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Chocolate Lake Recreation Centre, on Purcell's Cove Road.

The NDP holds 31 seats in the legislature, the Liberals 12 and the Tories seven.

Two seats are vacant.

When the election is called, it will be fought on a new electoral map that cuts the number of seats in the legislature to 51 from 52.

Nova Scotia's Liberal party is led by 48-year-old Stephen McNeil, who would be the acknowledged frontrunner if there is a fall campaign.

Jamie Baillie hasn't led his Progressive Conservative party into a campaign before.

But the 47-year-old accountant and one-time president of a credit union is schooled in the province's politics, having served as chief of staff to former Tory premier John Hamm a decade ago.

Premier Darrell Dexter, a 55-year-old lawyer, made history in 2009 by leading the NDP to its first victory in Atlantic Canada.
