Nova Scotians should know Saturday when they will next head to the polls in an provincial election.
The governing New Democratic Party has been coy about the precise timing of a call. But it is widely expected the announcement will come today in Cape Breton. If that's the case, Nova Scotians would go to the polls Oct. 8.
NDP leader Darrell Dexter is campaigning in Cape Breton today. The "Leader's Itinerary" — emailed to media organizations late Friday — lists several events, ending with a "Community event with NDP candidate Bert Lewis" in Port Hawkesbury at 4:00 p.m.
The leader of the Liberal Party, Stephen McNeil, will officially launch his campaign in Halifax. That event is also scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
Progressive Conservatives Leader Jamie Baillie officially opened his party's campaign headquarters Friday night in Halifax.
The NDP holds 31 seats in the legislature, the Liberals 12, and the Progressive Conservative Party, seven.
Two seats are vacant.
When the election is called, it will be fought on a new electoral map that cuts the number of seats in the legislature to 51 from 52.
