A man shot and killed by RCMP officers on the Cold Lake First Nation on Thursday was wanted in connection with sexual assaults, a spokesman with the Alberta Serious Response Team said.
A number of uniformed and plainclothes officers were sent to the reserve northeast of Edmonton to serve the arrest warrant on the suspect, 52, whose identity has not been made public, ASIRT spokeswoman Sarah Jackson said Friday.
ASIRT is an independent body that investigates injuries or deaths that may relate to the actions of a police officer.
The man was shot during an altercation, RCMP said earlier in the day. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"There was a confrontation ASIRT spokeswoman Sarah Jackson said. "During the confrontation with the male, one RCMP officer fired his service weapon, striking the male. ASIRT investigators have recovered a knife from the scene of the incident."
Alberta RCMP officers were involved in two other fatal incidents earlier this month:
In a fourth incident, ASIRT was called in to investigate after a man suspected of impaired driving was shot several times by RCMP officers in Grande Cache. The driver, Curtis Hallock, is known for his role on the Canadian reality TV show Mantracker.
