As city council searches for fresh blood to replace former mayor Michael Applebaum, Montrealers are still reeling from the corruption charges laid against a political leader who had pledged to clean up City Hall.
On Tuesday afternoon, Applebaum told a crowd of journalists and colleagues that he would step down in the wake of 14 charges, including fraud and conspiracy. While he maintained his innocence, the embattled politician said balancing his official duties while defending himself against the accusations would be too much to handle.
Montreal's city council is expected to vote on an interim mayor next week. (CBC) Montreal's 62 city council members will select an interim mayor sometime next week. Applebaum's replacement will serve until the next municipal election in November.
The executive committee is expected to pinpoint a date for the vote later today.
Councillors have until Friday to put their names forward. Several have expressed interest, including:
- François Croteau, borough mayor for Rosemont—La Petite–Patrie.
- Laurent Blanchard, executive committee president.
- Harout Chitilian, City Hall speaker.
- Alan Desousa, St-Laurent Borough mayor.
This is the second time in seven months that Montreal has been forced to search for a new leader.
Applebaum was selected as mayor by council on Nov. 16, 2012, following the resignation of Gérald Tremblay amid allegations of corruption. No charges have been laid against Tremblay.
Both Applebaum and Tremblay have denied the allegations against them.
Deputy Mayor Jane Cowell-Poitras will step in until a new interim mayor is selected, just as she did when Tremblay resigned.
