Family and friends are gathering for a funeral today, remembering five members of one family killed in a tragic car crash in South Surrey.
Two young children, their mother, their grandmother and their aunt died instantly when their car was hit broadside by a minivan after the driver allegedly ran a red light on the Pacific Highway Sunday.
Gurmit Sachdeva lost his wife, his five-year old-son, his three-year-old daughter, his sister, and his mother.
The Sachdeva family owns a sweet shop in Surrey and is well known in the South Asian community.
Darshi Dhillon runs a beauty salon in the same strip mall as the sweet shop and says she has known the Sachdevas for ten years.
"[The] whole community actually feels so down, like depressed," she said.
"Everybody talks about that death, and that accident. Every single person. It's very painful for the community, it's not easy to take it. Everybody goes numb when they hear it."
The 46-year-old minivan driver, a man from Langley, was the only survivor of the crash.
He is in a serious but stable condition in hospital and will likely face charges, Surrey RCMP said.
Funeral services begin at 10 a.m. PT at Riverside Funeral Home in Delta.
Police officers and first responders who were at the scene of the collision are expected to attend.
