A sentencing hearing will be held Wednesday for three youths who pleaded guilty to firing a rifle at a home in Hobbema, Alta., killing five-year-old Ethan Yellowbird as he slept in his bed.
The males, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pleaded guilty to manslaughter in November.
Yellowbird was sleeping in his father's home on the Samson Cree First Nation early on July 11, 2011, when bullets sprayed the home. He died after he was shot in the head.
Ethan Yellowbird, 5, was killed in Hobbema, Alta., after three teens shot at the house he was sleeping in. (Facebook)According to the agreed statement of facts, the oldest youth, then 17, used a rifle to fire the first shot over the house.
He handed the gun to the other boys, then 16 and 13, who fired two shots each at the house.
"One of the shots fired at the house hit Ethan Yellowbird," the court document stated. However, it isn't clear which teen fired the shot that killed the little boy.
The Crown prosecutor has not speculated on a possible motive for the shooting, but RCMP believed the teens were affiliated with gangs.
