Senate brings in auditors to review expense claims

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 08 Februari 2013 | 22.40

The subcommittee charged with overseeing internal financial matters reports that it has not only referred the files of three senators -- Liberal Mac Harb, Conservative Mike Duffy and newly Independent Patrick Brazeau -- to an outside auditor for further review, but notes that the chair and deputy chair are seeking legal advice on the matter of Senator Duffy's residency.

The full release:

Senator David Tkachuk, Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Internal Economy, Budgets and Administration, announced today that the appropriate subcommittees of the Internal Economy Committee have referred the residency declarations and related expenses of the following three senators to external auditors at Deloitte for review and report: Senator Brazeau, Senator Harb and Senator Duffy.

As well, the Chair and Deputy Chair (Senator Furey) of the committee are seeking legal advice on the question of Senator Duffy's residency.

UPDATE: In response to news of the review, Duffy released the following statement:

As a Prince Edward Islander, born and bred, I am proud to represent my province and its interests in the Senate of Canada. I represent taxpayers with care, and Canadians know I would never do anything to betray the public trust. I have a home in Prince Edward Island as required by law. I will have no further comment until this review is complete.
