An inquest into the death of a teenager who choked to death while prison guards videotaped the tragedy but did not intervene continues today in Toronto.
Nineteen-year-old Ashley Smith died in October 2007 in her segregation cell at the Grand Valley Institution in Kitchener, Ontario.
The five-woman coroner's jury will tour the prison on Thursday.
In an agreed statement of facts, court heard yesterday that the Moncton, New Brunswick, teen died after tying ligatures around her neck while guards watched and videotaped.
The guards had been ordered not to enter Smith's cell if she was breathing
The opening day of evidence marked the start of the second inquest.
The first attempt went off the rails amid legal squabbling, and was scrapped after the first coroner retired.
Julian Falconer represents Smith's family, and said it's hoped the inquest will shed light on why a mentally ill young woman was subjected to what he called "torturous" circumstances.
