Pickton inquiry report to be released today

The much-awaited report from the public inquiry that examined the case of B.C. serial killer Robert Pickton will be released later today, a decade after his arrest.

The inquiry was called in the wake of the murders of women from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, and looked into why Vancouver police and the RCMP failed to catch Pickton until February 2002.

Pickton was convicted of six counts of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

The remains or DNA of 33 women were found on his pig farm. He once told an undercover police officer that he killed 49 women.

The inquiry also examined how families of the victims were treated as they searched for missing loved ones.

Inquiry commissioner and former B.C. attorney general Wally Oppal says the report is complex and will zero in on the socio-economic factors involved.

"We're dealing with the largest mass murderer in Canadian history."

He says the 1,448-page report needs to be read and digested before forming opinions.

"So I just urge the parties to come together," Oppal said.

"I think it's a strong report. We make some good recommendations, but most of all, the parties need to keep an open mind and not reach a premature conclusion until they've had the opportunity to read the report."

Ernie Crey's sister, Dawn, went missing 12 years ago and her DNA was eventually found on Pickton's farm.

"Just because we've jailed an individual who's perhaps Canada's most prolific serial killer, it doesn't mean the streets are safe, and you can see it on the news nightly," Crey said.

He's looking to the report for concrete suggestions on how to improve policing; ensuring departments do a better job of co-ordinating investigations.

Crey also wants to see an attitude shift, with police working harder to help those vulnerable to violence, such as aboriginal women, drug addicts and sex trade workers.

Vancouver police, RCMP, victims' families and social service agencies are lined up to give their reaction once the report is released to the public, which is expected to start at 1 p.m. PT.
