A 64-year-old man has died and his 9-year-old grandson is in critical condition after the pair fell through the ice while skating on a private lake in Quebec's Eastern Townships.
Quebec provincial police said the incident happened at around 4:45 p.m. on a lake just off Hébert road, in Ascot Corner.
The two were skating on thin ice when the ice collapsed, and the boy fell into the icy water. The man tried to rescue him, but slipped into the lake, which is about two metres deep.
Other members of the family saw the incident from an adjacent house and tried to save the pair.
The boy's grandmother is also in hospital, suffering from hypothermia. She is expected to recover.
